The menu will be elaborate and a testament to the Belgian knowledge of great food. From Tomates Crevettes, North Sea shrimp croquettes as a starter to a Classic Flemish Carbonade, Mussels for your main, and of course you’ll have no other choice but to end with a wide variety of authentic Belgian desserts such as Belgian Chocolate Mousse or pancakes and more.

Whatever your taste, you will be able to indulge in many great options to choose from, thanks to the excellent selection by our Michelin star awarded Belgian Head Chef Chef Bart Thoelen.

BeHappy will be a beer lovers’ paradise at the Expo. No other country has developed as many different beer types as Belgium. We will serve a wide variety of Belgian draft and bottled beers for all different taste palettes.

BeLounge is located on the roof of the Belgian pavilion providing our guests with a relaxed lounge area along with wonderous views of the Expo site. Guests can choose from a selection of Belgian snacks, such as Steak Tartare on toast, cheese croquettes and more.

All our snacks are easily shared ‘tapas style’ with friends and family and go hand-in-hand with a variety of Belgian beers, Belgian inspired cocktails or a glass of bubbly.

In Belgium, these classics are mostly served by street vendors, we are giving Expo2020 visitors the opportunity to enjoy the same experience and authentic taste as we have in Belgium.

Fries, Frites, frietjes, chips: there’s no denying the merited standing they have for being totally amazing in Belgium, our visitors can enjoy our Authentic Belgian potato fries with a selection of Belgian sauces.

Our signature waffles are practically irresistible when you pass by and get a glimpse of the smell and are an absolute must try when you visit our pavilion. Visitors can choose from a selection signature waffles and toppings from various areas in Belgium. Bon Appétit

EXECUTIVE CHEF

BART THOELEN

Bart Thoelen, is the Executive Chef at the Belgian Pavilion.

Growing up on farms in the Belgian countryside and visiting the local seaside fish markets during family vacations, Barts passion for quality ingredients began at a young age. He started cooking at the age of 12 and had his first professional Culinary experience when he was just 15 years of age. His passion for cooking continued to grow and by the age of 19 he started his own catering company. After building his knowledge in his home country for more than 10 years, Bart relocated to the south of France to open his own restaurant Les Palmiers. Inspired by local producers he further expanded his culinary repertoire, with a focus on high end Catalan cuisine. In 2009, Bart was awarded his first Michelin star.

In 2013 Bart moved back to Belgium to join Atelier V as their executive Chef, a hospitality company which has numerous restaurants and hotels. With Bart’s vision, Atelier V quickly gained success and is now one of the leading hospitality agencies in Belgium. Due to this success, Bart became known to SWR Hospitality, who recruited him for an exciting position in Dubai, to develop the menu foundations for Maison Mathis in the ‘Arabian Ranches’. Under his vision, Maison Mathis grew into the well-known and respected restaurant and bar it is today.

In 2020 Bart joined Belgian Beer Café ‘Souk Madinat Jumeirah’, with his Belgian background, there was no better candidate that would be up for this task.

Now Bart took on the exciting challenge to be Executive Chef for the Belgian Pavilion at Expo 2020 where he provides all our guests with delicious authentic Belgian cuisine.
